How to Get Your Business Recommended by AI Search Engines
Every AI assistant decides who to recommend using a different pipeline. This is what each one actually does, and where a mid-sized company can influence the outcome.
How do AI search engines decide which businesses to recommend?
Three steps, and you only ever see the last one. The engine retrieves a set of candidate pages, ranks them, then writes an answer and attaches a few citations. Being named in that answer depends on all three, not just on whether your own website is good.
The mechanism that matters most happens before any of that. Models form a shortlist from what they already know about your category, then go looking. One study found being on that pre-search shortlist gives a brand a 68.9 percent chance of appearing in the answer, against 2.1 percent for a brand that is findable but never shortlisted. That is a 33 times difference, and it is built from third-party mentions rather than from your own pages.
Which engines matter, and how do they differ?
| Engine | Live search behaviour | Citations to brand-owned pages | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Searches live for more than 95% of answers | Mixed | Your own pages matter, and so do mentions elsewhere |
| Google AI Overviews | Mirrors traditional organic results | Favoured | Ranking in the top three organically still drives citation |
| Google AI Mode | Same index as AI Overviews, different model | Favoured | Names brands about twice as often as AI Overviews |
| Gemini | Grounds in Google's index, cites very few sources | Favoured | Average of 3.3 sources per answer, so the slot is scarce |
| Perplexity | Live fetch on every answer | Lower accuracy on brands | Names brands correctly only about 67.7% of the time |
| Claude | Searches live for roughly a third of answers | About two thirds | Depends more on training data than the others |
| Microsoft Copilot | Built on Bing's index | Mixed | Bing indexing is the prerequisite |
What actually gets a business recommended?
Four things, in order of measured effect. Being named consistently on third-party pages, because around 80 to 95 percent of bottom-of-funnel citations come from sources other than your own site. Being cited early on research-stage questions, because brands already cited while buyers research get named at the buying stage 94 percent of the time against 50 percent. Publishing original data, which earns about 45 percent more citations than ordinary posts. And being visible on Reddit, the single most-cited domain for transactional AI prompts.
What does not work, despite being widely sold: schema markup alone. A controlled test across 1,885 pages against 4,000 matched controls found no significant citation lift, and a small decline on Google AI Overviews.
Where does a mid-sized company start?
Start by finding out what the engines currently say about you. Ask each one the questions your buyers ask, and record whether you are named, who is named instead, and which pages get cited. That baseline costs nothing and it tells you whether the problem is access, accuracy, or simply absence.
Then fix the cheap things first: make sure every engine can read your site without running JavaScript, make your description of yourself identical everywhere, and correct any outdated third-party information about you. Those are days of work, not quarters.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
- Be named on the third-party pages ChatGPT already cites for your category, and answer the research-stage questions buyers ask before they are ready to buy. ChatGPT searches the web for more than 95 percent of its answers, so both your own pages and external mentions matter. Consistency about who you are and who you serve is the prerequisite.
- Can I pay to appear in AI search results?
- No. There is no submission form, no paid placement, and no advertising product for inclusion in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overview answers. Any agency promising guaranteed placement in an AI answer is overpromising. What can be influenced is whether you are findable, described consistently, and named in the sources these engines rely on.
- How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
- Corrections to existing information can propagate in about a month. Building citation presence takes longer, and the compounding period cited in category research runs 18 to 24 months for category inclusion. Set expectations on measured movement rather than on a date.
- Does schema markup help with AI search?
- Less than it is sold as. A controlled test of 1,885 pages against 4,000 matched controls found no statistically significant citation lift on ChatGPT or Google AI Mode, and a small decline on Google AI Overviews. Keep your markup clean and accurate, but do not treat it as the lever.
